Absence of Malice 1981 DVD
Absence of Malice is a 1981 film drama starrying Paul Newman and Sally Field, directed by Sydney Pollack.
Miami liquor wholesaler Michael Gallagher is the son of a deceased criminal who awakens one day to find himself a front-page story in the local newspaper, indicating that he is being investigated in the murder of a local longshoreman union official named Joey Diaz he knew.

The story was written by Miami Standard newspaper reporter Megan Carter, who based it on a file she read that was left on a desktop -- obviously intentionally -- of a federal prosecutor named Rosen.

Gallagher comes to the newspaper's office trying to discover the basis for the story, but Carter protects her anonymous source. He warns his best friend Teresa that federal agents may approach her to inquire about his whereabouts on the day of the crime. A meek school teacher and a devout Catholic, Teresa is nervous because it was on that very day that she secretly had an abortion, with her friend Gallagher by her side for support.
